| About TMJTemporomandibular joint syndrome is caused when the muscles affecting the temporomandibular joint as well as all other facial muscles on one side of the face tighten while the muscles on the opposite side stretch to compensate. TMJ affects facial musculature and cartilage (this is the reason for the popping, cracking or clacking sound many sufferers hear when they open and close the mouth and the sensation of misalignment or locking of the jaw). This results in pain in the face, head and neck area as well as reduced range of motion for open/close of the mouth. As the pain increases patients tend to use the facial muscles less and less and muscle atrophy begins to be present. In severe cases the jaw may lock or range may become so restricted that the patient is unable to masticate a regular diet and the patient resorts to a puree or liquid diet.
Traditional TMJ Treatment typically involves of one or more of the following: medication, oral exercise, night guard therapy, occulsal adjustment, teeth and mouth rehabilitations, and oral surgery. For those with less severe symptoms, who prefer more holistic approach, there are a number of non-invasive treatments and facial exercises and massage therapy techniques sufferers of TMJ can try to alleviate their symptoms (see links below).
