|Subject: Perspiration and Body Odor Fri Mar 14, 2008 7:02 am|| |
Perspiration is a part of the body’s natural cooling mechanism. Water on the surface of the skin evaporates and helps cool the body. Sweat itself is odorless, the odor is caused by bacteria on the skin releasing mal-odorous smelling natural chemicals.
There are two types of sweat glands in the dermus/skin: eccrine glands (present over most of the body; this perspiration consists mainly of water and trace amounts of other electrolytes) and apocrine glands (present in areas of the body with highest follicle count; scalp, armpits and groin regions, which during times of stress secrete a fatty sweat directly into the tubule of the gland; the wall of the tubule contracts and the sweat is pushed to the surface of the skin where bacteria begin breaking it down—it’s the bacterial breakdown of apocrine sweat that causes odor).
Natural remedies include bathing morning and night, drinking lots of water, maintaining a healthy diet, nighttime tomato baths (adding two cups of tomato juice to bath water), dusting the body with baking soda (to absorb odors), all-natural deodorants, eating raw alfalfa or parsley leaves and sprouts, drinking 12oz tomato juice daily, drinking sage tea daily and taking zinc or chlorophyll tablets.
